Wood Care Tips: Maintaining The Beauty Of Your Luxury Wooden Kitchen

Wood is one of the most beloved materials for kitchens. With its warmth, character, charm, and story-capturing longevity, it is the texture that memories are made of. Even without treatment, wood is a survivor. However, with a little care and attention, it can not only look its best today, but retain its original freshness for generations to come.

The First Day

The installation of fresh wood in a kitchen is always a memorable experience. The aroma floods the space, infusing it with atmosphere, promising a future of new narratives. This is the delight of wood, which is evocative on multiple sensory levels: the touch, the scent, and the uniqueness of the character. Whether you have chosen a timeless hardwood such as oak or walnut, or a cherry or pine that are designed to imprint memories, it is important to begin your maintenance straight away.

How To Care For Wood Kitchen Countertops

The first step to wood maintenance is sanding. Designed to remove dust, grime, and stains, it also creates the smooth, tactile surface for which wood is so adored. It is crucial that sanding is a gentle process rather than an abrasive one. Ideally, rub the wooden surface down by hand with 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper. If your preference is for an electric sander, use it kindly so as not to damage the wood. This is especially the case if your surfaces are softwoods.

Oiling Your Bespoke Wooden Kitchen

Oil has a range of benefits for wood. These include moisture and stain resistance, as well as UV protection. Oil also acts as a repellent to dirt, making wood very easy to clean. The application process is as effortless as the cleaning process. Simply soak a sponge in the liquid, and apply it slowly, following the grain of the wood. The wood will begin to naturally absorb the oil, which usually takes around five minutes. Afterwards, simply wipe away any excess and leave your surfaces until they are dry. Depending on the type of oil, drying will take between 12 – 24 hours. Once complete, your kitchen will have a soft, evocative glow.

The First Years

The first years are when you will really get to understand your bespoke wooden kitchen. As it settles into the ebb and flow of your home, you will learn its character and tolerances. You will discover the role that sunlight plays in fading wine stains, and whether you will be forgiven for spilling turmeric. Throughout the first years, regularly test your wood using the water-drop test. Simply let a few droplets of water fall onto the wood, and if they remain on the surface, the oil is in good condition. You will quickly notice an easy maintenance pattern. Usually, oil will protect your wood for at least a year, with heat, light, and cleaning chemicals all being factors unique to your home.

Day-To-Day

There are simple day-to-day steps that you can take to maintain the beauty of your bespoke wooden kitchen. Although stains can be easily sanded out, it is easier to avoid them altogether. Investing in some elegant trivets to avoid placing hot or wet pots directly on the worktop is always advisable. Softwoods such as pine will dent if scraped or if anything heavy is dropped on them. This is part of the charm of this particular wood, as it captures the bustle of life as it unfolds. However, if you want immaculate softwood surfaces, be fastidious about using chopping boards.
