The 5 costly mistakes made when buying a high end kitchen and how to avoid them

The purchasing of a high end bespoke kitchen is said to be the 2nd biggest purchasing decision of our lives after meeting our spouse and deciding on which house to buy. With this in mind, you really wouldn’t want to get it wrong by taking bad advice from shark-like salesmen in the nearest kitchen megastore. After designing and installing bespoke handmade kitchens for 50 years we have compiled a list of the 5 things to avoid when making decisions that you will have to live with for years to come.

Its starts and ends with the design so get it RIGHT

A luxury bespoke kitchen design is considered its not something that can be thrown together in a one-hour consultation over a cup of coffee The designer should really come to your home before the design is finalised, this will allow them to better understand your families lifestyle and how you interact and use the kitchen

. The kitchen is now the heart of the home and a well-designed kitchen should take into account not only the space it is going into but your lifestyle and how you will interact with space. You should think about if you’re a serious cook? Do you need a kitchen filled with the latest kitchen appliances? Do you really want that extractor hood that looks like it just came out of a sci-fi movie? high end quality designs are led by you.

It’s OK to be told about the details of the products but no one knows your home life more than you get clear on what’s important to you and KEEP THIS IN MIND.

Price comparison

If you’re the type of person who has a £5k - £10k budget for your kitchen then potentially this article isn’t for you. If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to compromise on quality when embarking on a home building or home renovating project then you defiantly want to read this next section....

The home interiors market is a huge and caters to everyone budget you can get a kitchen tap for £50 all the way to a solid brass instant hot water tap for £1000. Make sure when you get your specification of the design you are clear on what it is you are buying. If you are going to compare prices from different companies make sure you do it correctly just because both kitchens come with a sink doesn’t mean that it's the same.

Quality

To the untrained eye, quality is the hardest element to be a judge of. Remember you are making a significant investment in your bespoke handmade kitchen, don’t hesitate to ask questions. If someone makes you feel stupid for asking questions then they’re probably not the right company to buy from.

Guarantee

This ties into quality really well, If company A’s kitchen comes with a lengthy guarantee then its probably better quality than Company B’s that only offer 12 months. Find out what’s included in the guarantee and it's duration, what elements of the kitchen are covered under the guarantee. Drew Forsyth & Co guarantee all cabinetry and associated components for 10 years.

Building Work

Depending on whether your home building or home renovating, either way, there is going to be a substantial amount of building work that needs to happen before you can have your new high end

kitchen installed. The installation of the kitchen and the building work are integral to one another. If the kitchen company you choose isn’t going to organise /manage the building work ensure at a minimum that they can provide utility drawings to show your builders what is needed for the WATER, GAS and ELECTRIC supplies for your new kitchen layout.

When dealing with builders be sure to have an agreed price it is common now for building companies to quote 1 price and then add on thousands of pounds of extras throughout the project make sure you are working with a builder who has quoted and estimated the project thoroughly so there is no unexpected bills halfway through the project.
